After asking everyone I could think of - artist friends, friends and their kids, and my mom -- turned out that most people who weren't design professionals or artists (and even some of those who are) - actually liked the goose. Seems there really was no clear preference for *one* version of this design.
I first submitted this version -- then changed my mind half an hour before deadline, and updated it with the "semifinal" version (goose, no moon on back) - ... then got cold feet and changed it again 15 minutes before deadline, back to this version.
I still suspect that if one actually asked the kids, a lot of them would like the goose.
Still -- they might have accused me of confusing Brothers Grimm with Mother Goose, and we can't have that!
This looks more Puffin like anyhow - their other Grimm Tales covers seem all quite dark and a bit spooky. British understatement and all that. If it had been a German publishing house, I would definitely have gone for the "semifinal" version!
Must be the Estonian connection. You know, my favorite illustrator since a child has been Ilon Wikland (who illustrated all the Astrid Lindgren books) - and later I found out she was originally from Tartu! Came to Sweden during the war, just as my mother did to Germany.
So, talking about potential.... keep up the good work yourself!
Thnaks! Melanie just poured a bucket of cold water down me saying that LAC students weren't actually eligible ... she might have checked that before posting the contest on the student blog! Anyway. Hoping they won't realize until after the jurors have looked at the entries. I don't wanna win this contest. I want to work for Penguin or Puffin!
