Sheesh, I really needed to get this one out of my system.

Illustration for German literary fairytale "Der Knabe und der Wassermann" by Ernst Wiechert.

After spending years with the river people in their underwater palace, the boy begins to long for the sunlight. When the daughters of the Wassermann take him to play by the riverside, he'd climb up on a sun warmed rock and play his reed flute.

One day, inadvertently, the river girls take him close to his old home. His sister hears his plaintive flute tune and comes running ...

I think the project that this was supposed to be part of has died in the meanwhile, but what the heck -- this is definitely going to be part of my portfolio attack, to be committed in the next couple of months!

Adobe Illustrator.

Photographic textures:
sky, water, rocks - own photographs
fish scales, fabrics, wood - free textures from tha internet

Tools used: pen tool, symbol brush, gradients, pencil tool. Transparency & blend modes!

Well, I was trying to make it look less digital, and more art. :D

Honestly, though, I know what you mean - seems a lot of people who work with digital media tend to go for hyperrealism, because that's what the medium can do well. Still, it is still all *very* new, no reason, I think, not to experiment with other things.... imagine. We get to be the pioneers in a complete new art medium. I think that's really exciting! :)

I also have to say this, I *really* dig working in Adobe Illustrator. Even if it's far more time consuming than a quick Photoshop doodle.
