The second of my series of illustrations for the "Earthsea" series by Ursula Le Guin:
Arha (aka Tenar) and her friend Penthe are playing truant - they're spending an afternoon sitting on top of the huge old stone wall around the Place of the Tombs, skipping their priestly duties, and dreaming about what lies beyond those mountains. Manan the elderly Eunuch who is looking after Arha, comes to search for her, looking anxious...
This is from the part of the book that tells about Arha/Tenar's years as the young One Priestess of the Place of the Tombs.
A summary of 'The Tombs of Atuan" can be found here: [link] Warning: Full of spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Earthsea and the characters and places therein are owned and operated by Ursula Le Guin. [link]
yes. I thought I'd thow in a debodyated head just to keep the spooky atmosphere going. The landscape is directly inspired by the Central Otago area where they shot the Rohan sequence for LotR - where I was passing through on my summer trip.

Still Frodo the wanderer from the Shire would walk there, upon the grass among elanor and niphredil in fair Lothlorien.
I must reread this series, I'm not so familiar with the original three (only read them once or twice some years back).

92% of the population of Earth are boring, uncreative, unoriginal bums. If you are one of the 8% who aren't... do not copy and paste this into your signature!
I, on the other hand, read "Howl's Moving Castle" the other week, and enjoyed it a lot!
I think the Earthsea books improve on re-reading... I've read the whole sixology twice through now, and Tehanu three times I think - and I keep skipping back reading bits and pieces for my illustrations.
I wanted to have a scene where I can show some of what Atuan looks like, I went to this place on the South Island, that to me looked totally like I image Atuan - so it was quite easy to paint!
Stay tuned, some more are on the way.
